Battle of Marathon
The Battle of Marathon is famous for the footrunner who ran all the way to Athens from Marathon. He came with the news that quote: "We won," and then he died. That is the Marathon Run. The Battle of Marathon was a great turning point in the Greco-Persian War. This invasion was to try to get total control of Greece. Persian troops were led by Darius I of Persia but after reaching Athens, Persian forces were stopped and defeated. Marathon was in no sense a decisive victory over the Persians. However, it was the first time the Greeks had bested the Persians on land, and "their victory endowed the Greeks with a faith in their destiny that was to endure for three centuries, during which western culture was born."
The longest-lasting legacy of Marathon was truly amazing.
